MACKAY MARINA SHIPYARD – WINNER OF THE API ENVIRONMENTAL DEVELOPMENT AWARD

Mackay Marina Shipyard became operational in May 2003. The facility is one of the most modern and convenient places for boat maintenance on the East Coast of Australia.

The Shipyard boasts a concrete hardstand of over 14 000sqm. The hardstand can hold up to 35 vessels at a time, each standing in individual sites. All sites have single and three phase power and water available. Cradles, props and stands are available to suit all vessels with dry-storage is available for all vessels.

A 65 tonne travel-lift with a maximum beam of 9.2 metres and 4.5 metre draught at LAT is also in place. This facility is capable of lifting multihull vessels and caters for the increasing number of catamarans operating in the Great Barrier Reef area. Mackay Marina Shipyard is one of few facilities on the East Coast with this lifting ability. Loading and unloading transports, survey and inspection lifts, two, four and six sling lifts are all available. With the progression of the Marina , the capacity for this facility will be increased to 150 tonnes.

The development also includes the construction of three purpose built boat restoration sheds. The first shed operates as a fully covered, environmentally controlled spray-painting shed. This shed is capable of facilitating vessels over 25 metres in length. Owners are able to respray their vessels in all weather conditions. The second shed is for general maintenance and vessel restoration. This is also undercover and enables major vessels refits and overhauls to be performed without weather delays. The third shed is a purpose built abrasive blasting bay for wet and dry blasting. This will allow for the stripping back of old paint and other materials, in preparation for repainting.

Environmental considerations have been key to the design of the Shipyard. A sophisticated drainage network is in place, providing filtration and treatment to all wastewater. Waste oil is collected and recycled by a licensed waste removalist.

'The modern day Shipyard is more than a repair facility, it's a total 'one stop shop' for major refits as well as annual maintenance', explains Peter Hansen, Manager of Mackay Marina. “ Mackay Marina Shipyard has been open for less than for two years but is already setting benchmarks in service, environmental excellence and project management.”
